They are often large, fat and smug. Mostly they are male, but not exclusively so. They are wealthy because they have wealthy families who sent them to private schools, where they became mates with others who have wealthy families and live in exclusive areas. They consider themselves to be the elite and as such, they own much and like to exert influence and power.
Who are these people? They are the ones who own newspapers, radios, very large businesses and lots of shares in even bigger businesses. They are the BIG people. And it is the littlepeople who do all the work to earn them their billions. Many of them decide to become Property Developers. They don’t just decide to renovate a small family home. No! They buy large tracts of land and bribe councillors to pass permits for them to build huge shopping complexes, multi-story apartment blocks or office towers higher than any others allowed in the area.
There is a growing sub-group of these people whose ancestors come from countries where bribery and corruption have been part of the culture for hundreds of years. They are very sure that this is the way to do business in this country too. One family-member joins a major political party. Maybe he starts in the local council, where he practises vote rigging – maybe registering all his relatives and friends as living at his address, where they are eligible to vote for him. Other family members use his influence, allowing their interests to grow and their assets to flourish. Soon, he is heading to state parliament and from there becomes a head-counter, a mover and shaker behind the scenes, a maker and breaker of premiers and prime ministers.
Along the way, he encourages others to visit brothels, nightclubs and very expensive restaurants, where they might entertain expensive escorts. These entertainments are, naturally, part of doing business and must therefore be charged to the business account/union account/political party account. In no circumstances must the money come from his own pocket. No, no, no.
I come to the crux of my rant. I ask you: Who pays for all this bribery and corruption? Who pays for all the five hundred dollar bottles of wine and flowers flown in from France? Who pays for the mines to foul the earth and water we depend upon to grow our food and allow us to drink? Who? Well, YOU of course, but YOU are not really big and able to pay for all of this. No. YOU are really just a little person, a little person with a small income. Your children/grandchildren attend a local public school, where there isn’t enough money for every child to have a computer. You go to work in a shop, office or factory where you earn wages or a salary, so the government is able to deduct your thrice times tithe of tax before you even see it. You pay most of the taxes to run this country, to pay for the infrastructure like roads, railways, schools, hospitals, police, defence forces and pensions. It is possible that you own a small shop or business, a trade. You are not wealthy. You struggle to bring up your family and pay your bills. Once you thought you were middle class, but now you are one of The Battlers. The government woos you to gain power and then joins those who rip us off.
